View Module Processes Groups Use The most effective groups use a variety of processes to guide their work. Learn about the principles that guide group practices and the important processes groups use. View Module Tools Groups Use Some of the tools groups use to run effective meetings are a meeting facilitator, meeting minutes, written guidance, ground rules, and an agenda. View Module Tips and Strategies for Groups The tips section defines strategies for making a decision-making group more effective, both internally and externally. View Module Understanding Data as Information Understanding how to gather, use and interpret data helps groups make better, well-informed decisions. View Module The Role of Families on Groups When serving on a decision making group, it is important to know what your role is as a family representative and member of the group, what ways you might represent the perspective of other families, and how to share your family story. View Module Skills for Serving on Groups Strategies for preparing, participating, and follow-up after the meeting, including dealing with conflict, are necessary skills for serving on a group. These resources, published by the WI Family Assistance Center for Education, Training, and Support (WI FACETS), were developed as part of a grant from the WI Department of Public Instruction (WI DPI) under the Office of Special Education Services (OSEP).

The Guidebook

The creation of the Serving on Groups Guidebook came from an identified need to support families in serving on decision-making groups, but the information and structure of the book is intended to support anyone serving on those groups. It is a great introduction for some, a welcome refresher for others, and a resource for all, including experts and mentors, so everyone can come to the table ready to serve.

Leading by Convening and Serving on Groups are considered “two sides of the same coin.” Although it is not necessary to use both resources when serving on a group, it is highly recommended to utilize both resources for producing the most positive and efficient outcomes when making decisions in a group setting.

Leading by Convening, although similar to Serving on Groups, is a resource on how to effectively engage and lead through applied essential habits – such as coalescing around issues, ensuring relevant participation, and doing work together – to help achieve overall goals.
